Area Attractions
Greens Peak
Green’s Peak is a pine- and aspen-covered knoll which stands above the surrounding countryside. From highway 260 between Pinetop/Lakeside and Springerville, it’s along Forest Service Road 117, which is a dirt road to the north between the turnings for Sunrise and Greer. At 10,200 feet, it’s one of the higher points in Arizona. It’s the best known place to see Dusky Grouse in the state, mainly because there’s a dirt road that takes you right to the top, directly into the grouse’s preferred breeding habitat. It’s also the location for a reintroduction of the endangered Mexican Wolf, so there’s something else to look out for.
Sunrise Park Resort
Although Sunrise Park Resort is Arizona’s premier ski area, it is a four season getaway vacation destination that features all year outdoor recreation in a region filled with alpine splendor. Located in the Arizona White Mountains in northeast Arizona close to the New Mexico border, Sunrise Park Resort is a scenic wonderland characterized by pine forests, forested mountains and pristine lakes.
Mount Baldy
Mount Baldy is the highest peak in the White Mountains in Eastern Arizona and is the state’s second highest mountain outside of the San Francisco Range, which is located north of Flagstaff. The White Mountains feature many peaks breaching the 11,000-foot barrier, so Mount Baldy itself kind of “hides” amid many of its surrounding subpeaks. Also, Mount Baldy itself is a broad, rounded summit, further reducing its effects of height on the eye. A nearby sub-summit called “Baldy Peak” on the maps has a sharp, conical shape, but from most vantage points many miles distant, this little conical summit can itself blend into the melange of peaks in the range. Nevertheless, the Whites are the most expansive of the large mountains in Arizona, and it gets snow on par with peaks further north in Colorado or Utah.
Alpine Country Club
Located two miles east of the junction of U.S. 191 and 180 in Alpine. This course is known as the ”Alps” of Arizona, for it is the highest golf course in the southwest at 8,500 feet above sea level. Seasonal golfers meander down fairways that are surrounded by dense groves of aspen trees, blue spruce, and ponderosa pines. It is a magnificent setting and the one of the coolest summer golf courses in the west. Guests are welcome.
Hawley Lake
This 260 acre lake is located on the White Mountains Apache Indian Reservation near Pinetop Lakeside in Arizona’s White Mountains. At a high altitude of about 8,200 feet, the climate during late spring, summer and early fall are cool and refreshing making it a popular getaway spot for the desert dwellers in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area.
